Sanremo Pride

Sanremo, famous for its Italian Song Festival, has played a significant role in the history of the Italian LGBTQ+ movement. On April 5, 1972, the city hosted the first demonstration in Italy to defend the rights of homosexual people, marking the beginning of a journey towards equality and acceptance.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this historic event, the first Sanremo Pride, organized by Arcigay, was held on April 9, 2022. The demonstration was attended by approximately 3,000 people, kicking off the Onda Pride 2022.

The following year, on April 8, 2023, Sanremo hosted Pride again, highlighting the continued importance of promoting the rights and visibility of the LGBTQ+ community. In 2024, Pride was held on April 6, continuing the city's annual tradition of supporting inclusivity and diversity.

Today, Sanremo Pride represents not only a celebration of LGBTQ+ pride, but also a reminder of the city’s history and commitment to promoting civil rights. The event continues to attract participants from all over Italy, consolidating Sanremo as a symbol of inclusiveness and social progress.

On Saturday 5 April 2025, Sanremo Pride returns, an event that every year combines celebration, activism and memory.

The atmosphere promises to be super charged, in the wake of a tradition that has transformed the city of flowers into a symbol of Italian LGBTIQ+ pride.

This event represented a crucial moment: it marked the beginning of the homosexual liberation movement in Italy. It has even been compared to the Stonewall uprising in the United States, earning it the nickname “Italian Stonewall“.
